What to Do When Your Dog Won't Eat

If your dog is not eating, there are a few things you can do to try and get them to eat. The most important thing is to make sure that they are getting enough fluids. You can try giving them some water or milk in a syringe or dropper. If they still will not eat, you may have to take them to the vet.

Reasons your dog won’t eat

  • There could be an underlying health condition causing your dog to lose their appetite. If you think this might be the case, take them to the vet as soon as possible.

  • Your dog may not be used to their new food. Try slowly transitioning them to the new food over the course of a week or so.

  • Your dog may simply not be hungry. Dogs, like people, sometimes go through periods where they don’t have much of an appetite. This is usually nothing to worry about but if you are concerned, talk to your vet.

If your dog is showing any other symptoms along with not eating, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or weight loss, please see your vet right away. Not eating can be a sign of serious illness in dogs and prompt treatment is essential.

If your dog is otherwise healthy but just doesn’t seem to be interested in food, there are a few things you can try.

  • Add some wet food or broth to their dry food to make it more appealing.

  • Try feeding them smaller meals more often throughout the day instead of one large meal.

  • Give them some new toys or chew bones to help stimulate their appetite.

As long as your dog is drinking plenty of fluids and doesn’t seem to be in any distress, there is usually no need for concern if they go off their food for a day or two. However, if they continue to refuse food or show any other signs of illness, please see your vet. Pets can deteriorate quickly when they are not eating and prompt treatment may be necessary. If you are ever unsure, it is always better to err on the side of caution and take your pet to the vet. They will be able to give you peace of mind and make sure that your pet is healthy and happy.
